Survey the relevant area
Agree the scope with production, maintenance and design teams. Include the installation footprint, transport route, service connections and neighbouring workstations where relevant. Coordinate capture with site access and safety arrangements.
A scan records visible conditions at a particular time. Hidden services, moving equipment and inaccessible zones need separate treatment. Check critical connection dimensions specifically before execution.
Compare proposals in a common reference
Bring the proposed equipment layout and surveyed hall into a shared coordinate reference. Review defined operating, maintenance and transport spaces as well as machine envelopes. Manufacturer information and specialist requirements supply those additional constraints.
Fraunhofer IPA describes 3D visualisation as a way to examine equipment heights and clashes with building services. Turn each potential conflict in your project into a reviewable issue with an owner and recorded decision.
Example: moving a production line
For an illustrative line relocation, first examine the route from the hall entrance to its new position. Then compare two layouts: where do materials move, which connections need alteration and which areas remain usable during installation?
The model helps coordination, but alone it does not provide a validated throughput simulation or safety approval. Cycle times, staffing and process logic require their own data. A geometric clash and an operational bottleneck are different questions.
Measure the benefit within the project
Agree useful measures in advance, such as interfaces resolved before work starts or unplanned repeat measurements. Record actual outcomes rather than assuming a standard time or cost saving.
- Include installation routes and maintenance clearances.
- Check critical dimensions and assumptions on site.
- Resolve open issues before authorising the change.
- Update the record to the actual installed condition.
Your next step
GeoScan can support surveying and BIM preparation of the relevant existing conditions. Production planning, workplace safety and execution approvals remain with the responsible specialists.
